A Dream Location for a Seattle Senior Session
When this Class of 2025 senior reached out to me, she told me she wanted a senior session in a beautiful library, something timeless, elegant, and full of personality. As a Seattle senior photographer, I knew immediately where to take her: the iconic Suzzallo Library at the University of Washington.
Often described as “Seattle’s most beautiful library,” Suzzallo is a masterpiece of Gothic architecture. Its grand reading room, soaring ceilings, and cathedral-like windows make it one of the most breathtaking places for senior portraits in Seattle.
I always encourage my seniors to choose locations that feel inspiring, whether that’s a mountain overlook like Snoqualmie Point Park or an architectural landmark like Suzzallo Library.
Early fall is one of the most popular times for senior portraits, perfect lighting, mild weather, and yearbook deadlines approaching. (If you’re wondering the best season to book, check out my guide on When to Take Senior Photos.)
Capturing the Magic of Suzzallo Library
We met on a sunny Sunday afternoon, when the light was streaming through the tall arched windows and painting the stone walls in soft, warm tones. We weren’t alone in admiring the setting. The library was bustling with celebrations. Two wedding couples, two quinceañeras, and another graduate were also there for photos.
Everyone took turns on the grand staircase, each group waiting patiently to use the space without disturbing students quietly studying nearby. Despite the activity, there was a sense of camaraderie and shared excitement. Everyone was there to capture a special milestone in one of Seattle’s most awe-inspiring indoor locations.
Timeless Beauty in Every Corner
Suzzallo’s Reading Room feels like something out of a movie. Between the vaulted ceilings, intricate woodwork, and rows of glowing chandeliers, every corner tells a story. The warm light from the tall windows created a golden, cinematic glow that perfectly complemented her calm confidence and natural poise.
Her first outfit, a black puff-sleeve cutout dress tied in the back with a bow, fit seamlessly into the library’s refined aesthetic. Against the soft neutral stone and rich wood tones, she looked effortlessly sophisticated.
A Second Look Among the Library Shelves
For the second half of her hour-long senior photo session, she changed into a more casual outfit for photos among the library’s bookshelves. These moments felt personal and relaxed, a lovely contrast to the grandeur of the reading room. Photographing between the rows of books added intimacy and depth to her gallery.
She laughed, posed naturally, and embraced the setting. The perfect mix of sophistication and youthful energy.
Celebrating Family and Future Dreams
What made this session even more special was the presence of her parents. They stood nearby for most of the shoot, beaming with pride. When we captured a few photos of the three of them together, the emotion in the room was undeniable: love, pride, and joy all wrapped into one moment.
She’ll be graduating from high school this year and plans to pursue a degree in musical theater, a path that matches her expressive and creative personality perfectly. Watching her parents’ admiration as she confidently posed made this session a true celebration of her journey so far, and all that’s still to come.
I always love when parents join in for a few portraits. Those small family moments are truly priceless. (You can see another favorite example in my Redondo Beach graduation session).
Why Suzzallo Library Is a Must-See Senior Photo Location
Suzzallo Library is one of Seattle’s most breathtaking indoor photo spots, perfect for seniors who want portraits that feel timeless and artistic. Between the golden light, historic architecture, and sense of quiet grandeur, it’s ideal for sessions that celebrate individuality and accomplishment.
Whether you’re drawn to grand architectural backdrops or cozy spaces filled with character, Suzzallo offers a bit of both. It’s also a great alternative for Seattle seniors who want an indoor location during the rainy months without sacrificing natural light or beauty.
