Milestone birthdays deserve to be celebrated, and what better way than with a portrait session that captures confidence, joy, and reflection? This 40th birthday photoshoot took place at one of my favorite local spots, Flaming Geyser State Park in Auburn, WA, during the golden hour when the light softened over the trees and river.


I had photographed a motherhood session here before, and returning to this park for another meaningful shoot reminded me just how special this location is. For my client, Flaming Geyser is a personal favorite, peaceful, scenic, and filled with memories. It was the perfect backdrop to celebrate her new chapter with warmth and beauty.

Why Flaming Geyser State Park Is a Hidden Gem for Portraits


Flaming Geyser is one of those parks that surprises you with how much variety it offers. Between the flowing Green River, forested paths, and open meadows, there’s no shortage of gorgeous scenery.


The sunlight filtering through the trees during golden hour created a soft, glowing effect that made each image feel warm and timeless. Whether standing by the water or framed by the greenery, every part of the park brought something unique to her portraits.

A Session to Celebrate Confidence and Growth


This photoshoot was all about self-celebration. Turning 40 is a milestone worth honoring, a moment to look back on everything achieved and forward to everything yet to come. My client wanted her session to reflect confidence and happiness, and she brought that energy effortlessly.


Her two outfits, a neutral-toned lace kimono and a colorful bohemian look, worked beautifully against the natural landscape. Each look offered a different mood, from earthy elegance to vibrant joy.


We took our time exploring the park, stopping by the trees, open fields, and along the riverbank. The final images were a mix of serene portraits and lighthearted moments that truly reflect her personality.


Just like in my Seattle Senior Photo Prep Guide, we timed this session for golden hour to make the most of that soft evening light.
