Graduation season is a milestone worth celebrating, and what better way than with a golden hour photoshoot overlooking the Seattle skyline? Recently, I photographed Amilia for her graduation portraits at Kerry Park, and the light, the city, and her energy came together perfectly.

A Look Back: Our First Photoshoot

This was actually our second time working together, following a creative, retro-inspired session at Luna Park Café in West Seattle. That first shoot had vintage charm, neon signs, and playful vibes, so I knew her Seattle graduation photos would be just as expressive and fun. Amilia was amazing to work with, bringing creativity and energy to every pose. So when the opportunity came to collaborate again for a graduation-themed shoot, I knew it would be another incredible session.

Why We Chose Kerry Park for This Senior Session

We wanted a location that felt timeless, something that captured both Amilia’s confidence and the beauty of Seattle itself.

Kerry Park, perched on Queen Anne Hill, offered exactly that. With views of downtown Seattle, the Space Needle, and even Mount Rainier on a clear day, it’s one of the most iconic backdrops for senior and graduation portraits in Seattle. As the sun dipped lower, the golden light added a warm glow to her maroon graduation gown and turned every photo into a frame-worthy keepsake. Why Golden Hour is the Best Time for Graduation Photos

Golden hour, that short window right after sunrise or before sunset, is every photographer’s dream. The light is soft and flattering, skin tones look radiant, and every image takes on a cinematic warmth.

During Amilia’s session, that glow illuminated her hair and added depth to the Seattle skyline behind her. Whether at Kerry Park, Discovery Park, or the waterfront, golden hour photography in Seattle brings out the best of both the subject and the city.

Kerry Park isn't the only iconic Seattle location that works perfectly for golden hour. My sessions at the Seattle Waterfront and Alki Beach each highlighted the beauty of the city at that hour.

Tips for a Perfect Graduation Photoshoot

If you're considering booking a graduation photoshoot, here are a few tips to make the most of your session:

  • Plan Your Outfit – A cap and gown are a must, but also consider wearing a stylish outfit underneath. A dress, suit, or casual-chic look can add variety to your photos.
  • Use Meaningful Props – Bring a diploma cover, tassel, or even confetti to personalize your session. Amilia’s shots with her tassel up close turned out to be some of the most creative!
  • Pick a Meaningful Location – Whether it’s your school’s campus, a Seattle landmark like Kerry Park, or a place that holds personal significance, your background can add an extra layer of storytelling to your photos.
  • Book During Golden Hour – As mentioned, lighting can make or break your photos. Scheduling your session in the early morning or late afternoon ensures soft, natural light that flatters your skin and adds warmth to your images.
  • Relax & Have Fun – The best photos come from natural expressions. Amilia’s laughter and candid moments made her gallery truly shine. If you’re nervous, just focus on enjoying the experience, and I’ll guide you through natural poses.
