Traveling to Seattle from Illinois gave this high school senior an opportunity to create portraits somewhere completely different from home. Olympic Sculpture Park was an ideal location for her Seattle senior photo session because it brought together several distinctly Pacific Northwest backgrounds within a very short walking distance.
During one session, we incorporated modern city scenery, views of the Space Needle, outdoor art, greenery, large rocks, and the beach along Elliott Bay. The resulting gallery felt varied without requiring us to drive between multiple Seattle photo locations or spend much of the session traveling.

The large rocks beside the shoreline were especially useful for adding depth and variety to the portraits. They provided places for seated poses as well as a rugged foreground for wider images that included the water.
According to the Seattle Art Museum’s guide to Olympic Sculpture Park, the shoreline incorporates relocated riprap rocks and native plantings. Together, these features give the beach its distinctive Pacific Northwest appearance.
Moving from the Space Needle and modern sculpture backgrounds to the beach made this session feel almost like two locations in one.
