Outdoor family photography sessions are always special, but this one at Angel Lake Park in SeaTac, Washington was extra meaningful. Not only were we celebrating a fifth birthday, but this was also my second session with this wonderful family, making it even more rewarding to document how much their kids have grown.
Angel Lake Park is a beautiful spot for family photos in the SeaTac area, offering open grassy spaces, lakeside views, and room for kids to move freely. That flexibility is especially important when photographing young children, and this session was full of energy, laughter, and playful moments from start to finish.
A Birthday-Focused Family Photography Session
This session centered around celebrating one of the boys turning five. Gold balloon numbers, matching black and yellow outfits, and lots of movement made the photos feel festive without being overly staged. Birthday family photo sessions like this are a great alternative to traditional studio portraits, especially for kids who love being outdoors.
Because the session took place in the middle of the day, we leaned into bright, cheerful light rather than golden hour. Midday sessions are often overlooked, but parks like Angel Lake work beautifully at this time, especially for families with younger children and tighter schedules.
Birthday sessions are such a meaningful way to document childhood, whether it’s a playful family celebration like this one or milestone portraits focused entirely on the child, like these golden hour birthday photos at Flaming Geyser State Park.
Photographing Kids Who Love to Move
One of the biggest concerns parents have before booking family photos is whether their kids will “cooperate.” The truth is, kids don’t need to sit perfectly still to create beautiful images. Some of the strongest photos from this session came from running, laughing, and interacting naturally.
Angel Lake Park gave us plenty of space for candid moments, whether it was tossing balloons into the air, racing across the grass, or sharing quick hugs between parents and kids. These in-between moments are often what families treasure most.
Including Both Parents Makes a Difference
This session was especially meaningful because dad was able to join this time, making it the first full family session together. Having both parents present allowed us to capture a wider variety of images, from full family portraits to individual moments between each parent and child.
It also gave the session a relaxed, balanced feel, with everyone able to participate and enjoy the experience rather than feeling rushed or overwhelmed.
A Returning Family Session
I first photographed this family during a fall family session at Lake Fenwick Park in Kent, WA, where it was just mom and the boys during golden hour. Seeing families return for another session is one of the best parts of being a family photographer, it means they felt comfortable, enjoyed the experience, and trusted me to capture their memories again.
This time, with a different season, location, and family dynamic, the photos tell a completely new chapter of their story.
Why Angel Lake Park Is a Great Location for Family Photos
Angel Lake Park is an ideal location for family photography in SeaTac because it offers:
- Open space for kids to move naturally
- Scenic lake views without long walking distances
- Easy access and parking for families with young children
It’s especially well-suited for birthday sessions, repeat family photos, and relaxed lifestyle portraits where connection matters more than perfect posing.
Fall continues to be one of my favorite seasons for family photography in the Seattle–Tacoma area, whether it’s lakeside sessions like this one at Angel Lake Park or earlier fall family photos at Wright Park in Tacoma, where rich autumn color creates a cozy, timeless backdrop.
