There’s something especially meaningful about photographing seniors in places that reflect who they are right now, not just what they look like, but what they love.
For this Class of 2026 senior session, we combined dramatic theater portraits, elegant cap-and-gown photos, and soft garden portraits to create a graduation gallery that truly felt personal to her story. As a self-described “theater kid,” she wanted senior photos that reflected the stage, creativity, and confidence she’s built throughout high school.
A few days before this session, she performed in her final school production, making these portraits feel even more emotional and memorable.

From Seattle’s Suzzallo Library to Her High School Stage
Earlier in her senior year, we photographed part of her session at the iconic University of Washington Suzzallo Library in Seattle. The dramatic architecture, warm lighting, and academic atmosphere gave those portraits a timeless, editorial-inspired feel.

For the second half of her senior portraits, we wanted to create something even more personal, incorporating the theater where she spent so much of her high school experience performing on stage.
That combination made this Class of 2026 graduation session feel incredibly meaningful and unique to her story.
Starting the Session at Her High School Theater
We began this graduation session inside her high school auditorium in Eastern Washington, where she spent so much of her high school experience performing on stage.
The theater instantly added a dramatic and cinematic feel to the portraits:
- bold red auditorium seating
- stage lighting
- black curtains
- cap and gown styling
- editorial-inspired posing
Some of my favorite images from this part of the session were the portraits taken directly on stage. They felt powerful and symbolic, almost like a final curtain call before graduation.
We also captured a mix of:
- classic cap-and-gown portraits
- creative editorial poses
- detail shots with her tassel
- dramatic stage silhouettes
- personality-focused portraits that highlighted her confidence and creativity
The combination of the bright red graduation gown against the dark theater background created such a striking visual contrast.
Combining Cap & Gown Photos With Creative Portraits
One thing I always encourage during senior sessions is variety.
Instead of only taking traditional graduation photos, we incorporated multiple looks and locations to give her gallery a more storytelling-focused feel. Her session included:
- classic graduation portraits
- theater-inspired editorial images
- natural outdoor portraits
- close-up personality shots
- cinematic stage photos
This mix helped the gallery feel elevated and personal rather than overly posed or repetitive.
For seniors involved in theater, dance, choir, music, or other creative arts, incorporating meaningful locations can make graduation photos feel so much more authentic.
Garden Portraits With a Softer Spring Feel
After finishing at the theater, we headed to a nearby garden location for a completely different atmosphere.
The outdoor portion of the session featured:
- blooming flowers
- soft greenery
- walking paths
- bright natural light
- relaxed spring portraits
The contrast between the dramatic theater setting and the soft garden scenery made the final gallery feel incredibly balanced.
Her bright red graduation gown stood out beautifully against the greenery and flowers, creating portraits that felt vibrant, joyful, and artistic all at once.
These images had a softer, more celebratory energy compared to the dramatic stage portraits, which made the overall session feel even more complete.
Senior Sessions That Reflect Personality
One of the best parts of senior photography is creating sessions that feel true to each graduate’s personality and interests.
