Graduation photos at the University of Washington are always special, and this recent Seattle graduation session combined iconic campus landmarks, meaningful personal locations, and one unexpected moment that made the evening even more memorable.
For her UW graduation session, we planned a golden-hour walk through campus, incorporating some of the university's most recognizable locations while also highlighting places that held significance during her undergraduate years. The University of Washington campus is one of my favorite locations for Seattle graduation photos because it offers a variety of historic architecture, green spaces, and iconic landmarks all within walking distance.

Starting at the University of Washington W Sculpture
Like many UW graduates, one of her must-have locations was the famous W Sculpture near the entrance to campus.
When we arrived, however, we quickly discovered we weren't the only ones with that idea. The sculpture was surrounded by other graduates and their families taking photos, which is incredibly common during graduation season.
Rather than waiting, we decided to take advantage of the beautiful evening light and explore other areas of campus first.
Golden Hour Along UW's Tree-Lined Walkways
One of the things that makes the University of Washington campus so photogenic is the variety of scenery available within a short walk.
As the sun began to lower in the sky, we stopped along one of UW's tree-lined pathways. The towering trees created a beautiful natural canopy overhead while the warm evening light filtered through the leaves.
These images provided a completely different feel from the traditional architecture-focused portraits that would come later in the session and showcased another side of the University of Washington campus.
Graduation Photos at Raitt Hall
From there, we headed to Raitt Hall.
With its Gothic-inspired architecture, stone details, and dramatic entryway, Raitt Hall offers some of the most elegant portrait opportunities on campus. The historic character of the building paired beautifully with her black dress, cap, and gown.
The combination of architecture and soft golden-hour light created some of my favorite graduation portraits from the evening.

Graduation Photos in the UW Quad
After finishing the cap-and-gown portion of the session, she changed into a more casual outfit for a different look.
We made our way into the Quad, the area famous each spring for UW's iconic cherry blossoms. While the blossoms weren't in bloom during this session, the Quad remains one of the most beautiful locations on campus year-round.
Here we captured both individual portraits and photos with her boyfriend. The benches, mature trees, and open green spaces created a relaxed atmosphere that contrasted nicely with the more formal graduation portraits.
Including a significant other in part of a graduation session can be a wonderful way to document not only an academic milestone, but also the people who supported that journey along the way.
Graduation Photos at Miller Hall
Next, we walked over to Miller Hall.
The ivy-covered exterior and historic architecture make Miller Hall one of the most visually striking buildings at the University of Washington. The combination of brick, stone, and climbing greenery creates a timeless backdrop that photographs beautifully in every season.

Returning to a Meaningful Place: Smith Hall
Before heading back to the W Sculpture, we made one final stop at Smith Hall.
While many graduation sessions focus solely on iconic campus landmarks, I always love when graduates choose locations that have personal meaning to them.
She shared that Smith Hall was one of the buildings where she spent much of her undergraduate experience, making it one of the most meaningful stops of the evening. Including locations that played an important role in a student's college journey helps create graduation photos that feel personal rather than simply scenic.
Those personal connections often make for the most treasured photographs because they tell a deeper story about a student's time at the University of Washington.
Finishing at the W Sculpture
As golden hour approached its peak, we returned to the W Sculpture.
It was still one of the busiest spots on campus, but after waiting our turn, we were finally able to capture the classic University of Washington graduation photos she had envisioned.
The warm evening light paired perfectly with the purple stole and UW colors, creating a beautiful ending to the session.
Then came one of the most unexpected moments of the evening.
While we were taking photos at the sculpture, a police officer stopped at the nearby intersection. Through his vehicle's loudspeaker, he called out congratulations to the graduates taking photos around campus.
It was a small gesture, but one that brought smiles to everyone nearby and felt like the perfect way to celebrate the occasion.

The University of Washington campus is one of the best locations in Seattle for graduation photography. From the W Sculpture and Smith Hall to Miller Hall, the Quad, Drumheller Fountain, and Suzzallo Library, UW offers an incredible variety of backdrops that can easily be combined into a single graduation session.
